The attorneys of Gawthrop Greenwood have wide-ranging experience in providing tax-focused services to meet our clients' needs. Our attorneys create and implement tax planning strategies, ranging from simple to highly complex, that minimize federal, state and local taxes of every type. When necessary, our attorneys also have experience advocating for our clients in front of all taxing authorities, the tax courts, and handling tax matters in state and federal court. Attorneys in this practice group have served as the head of the tax departments in large financial institutions, managed the tax department of large law firms, worked in house in corporate tax departments, and taught various tax classes at the collegiate, graduate and post-graduate level. In addition, our attorneys are frequent authors and lecturers on various topics in taxation.

For individuals and small business owners, Gawthrop can provide extensive estate, gift and generation-skipping transfer tax planning and business succession planning. In addition, Gawthrop regularly assists clients in yearly income tax planning, the review and implementation of compensation plans for highly compensated individuals, and other investment planning, which minimizes applicable taxes while reaching non-tax goals.

For larger businesses, we can also assist in structuring business transactions, from the formation of new entities, to employee compensation, mergers and acquisitions, or the disposition or termination of the company, in the most tax advantageous manner allowed.

For both individuals and businesses, we can handle virtually any type of tax controversy, whether it is at the local, state or federal level. Our attorneys often negotiate with agents, appear before various boards and committees, and, when required, take tax matters to court.

Finally, our attorneys have experience creating and representing exempt organizations, including public charities, private foundations, and non-charitable social, fraternal and social organizations. We also provide guidance to board members, managers, and employees of their obligations and rights with the exempt organization and frequently serve on boards of such organizations.
